Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan karena adanya penemuan yang ada di kelas saat peneliti melaksanakan kegiatan asistensi mengajar. Peneliti menemukan fakta bahwa siswa laki-laki cenderung aktif saat kegiatan speaking di depan kelas dibandingkan siswa perempuan belajar pada saat mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa berdasarkan gender mereka serta faktor apa saja yang memengaruhi kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris mereka. Metode penelitian adalah penelitian kualitatif. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian studi kasus. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswi perempuan lebih baik daripada siswi laki-laki. Total skor rata-rata siswi perempuan adalah 16,4 sementara skor siswa laki-laki 14,75. Siswa perempuan lebih baik dalam hal kosa kata, tata bahasa, dan unsur kefasihan. Siswa laki-laki pandai pengucapan dan intonasi. Empat faktor yang memengaruhi kemampuan berbicara siswa adalah faktor psikologi, perbedaan struktur otak, faktor budaya, dan faktor lingkungan. Faktor yang paling berpengaruh adalah faktor psikologi dan faktor lingkungan siswa. Faktor selanjutnya adalah karena perbedaan struktur otak siswa. Terakhir adalah pengaruh kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa dikarenakan faktor budaya.

This research was conducted because of the findings in the class when researcher carried out teaching assistance activities. Researcher found the fact that male students tend to be active when speaking in front of the class compared to female students when learning English. The purpose of this study was to determine students' English speaking ability based on their gender and what factors influenced their English speaking ability. The research method is qualitative research. This type of research is case study research. The results of this study indicate that female students' English speaking ability is better than male students. The average total score of female students was 16.4 while that of male students was 14.75. Female students did better in terms of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency. Males are good at intonation. The four factors that influence students' speaking ability are psychological factors, differences in brain structure, cultural factors, and environmental factors. The most influential factors are psychological factors and student environmental factors. The next factor is due to differences in student brain structure. Lastly is the influence of the ability to speak English due to cultural factors of students.
